Nicholas Carr has written an article weighting in on the effect the internet has on learning. Carr use of the Stanley Kubrick 2001: A space odyssey movie reference where the Artificial computer Dave’s intelligence is systematically removed demonstrates the possible upshot occurring with today’s learning. Carr brings the idea that this generation reads, researches, understands and interpret information is reprogramming human mines. A study on online research habits conducted by scholars from the University College London suggests “that we may well be in the midst of a sea of change in the way we read and think.” The study suggested that people used a form of skimming activity, jumping from site to site not coming back for further reference. Carr continues to reinforce this sea of change by added in Maryanne Wolf, a psychologist at Tufts University and the author of Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the reading Brain. “We are how we read”. Wolf is concerned that the efficiency and immediacy may weaken our capacity of deep reading. As with Carr I to see this age of information by the second as not just a reprogramming and yes I can see the concern Of Wolf. Reprogramming or is the skimming, jumping from site to site the upgrade that the human brain needs. James Olds professor of neuroscience at Krasnow Institute for Advance Study at George Mason University, say “that even the adult mind is very plastic”. Nerve cells routinely break old connections and form new ones”the brain”, according to Olds, “has the ability to reprogram itself on the fly, altering the way it functions.” I call this an upgrade that must be reprogrammed to use all the new features. The internet is changing the way we think and the way we read. And yes people are changing their cognitive memory and yes it will take some time to reprogram the upgrade to the new knowledge machine the internet. I think Carr and his colleagues, associate and pears just want us to see the change not just hear it and react accordingly. Listen Dave’s not here version upgrade ready for down load.
