Part A:
Of the many parts of Cynthia Selfe's essay, "Lest We Think the Revolution is a Revolution," I investgated more closely the works on page 308, paragraphs 51-54. In this section, Selfe is explaining that the advetisements we see in the media still show life as it was even back in the fifties. There are still gender roles being played out. The example, figure10, shows a family sitting in front of a television. It is a typical family years ago, father fiure with control ove the remote and the mother and children sitting there watching. Selfe claims that since there are so many single parents now and even gay couples, that showing this sort of family is not an accurate representation of our culture. She says that if we are to accept the differences as we claim, we need to show it cultrually as well. We need to show the change we would like to see. The gender specific roles have evolved, as Selfes explains though the figures and examples in her writing. The secretary from the fifties has become the multi-talented super woman of today. Still, the same role is played, just in an evolved form.
Part B:
In Cynthia Selfe's essay," Lest We Think the Revoltion is a Revolution," she claims that the gender roles in the media are protrayed the same way as they used to be back in the fifties. Gender assumes their decided role in society, she claims this explaining, "Men use technology to accomplish thigs; women benefit from technology to enhance the ease of their lives or to benefit their families" (Selfe, Par. 51). If you think about it, men are still played as the busy bodies, the ones to get things done whether it be at home or on the job, while women are still the ones who take care of the family. While there is nothing wrong with this, when it is shown the same everytime in the media it is making it seem like the culture only accepts that lifestyle. There are single father's out there, one wouldn't know it based on what is in the media, but it happens and we claim to accept it but it is never a cultral representation. It is the same stuff again and again. Due to the fact that our culture is repeatedly misrepresented, it brings one to wonder, are things actually going to change?
