Growing Up Online by Brandon Toner

PBS's documentary "Growing Up Online" is illustrating the way people today use the internet and how it affects them. The fist section "Living Their Lives Essentially Online" describes how more and more teens are living online instead of actually hanging out with their friends. They claim that 90% of all teens are online, and the number is still growing. They then go on to talk about how the use of services like Spark notes are making it easier for students to cheat. An example is given of a person that leads a completely different life online. Online she is popular, and attractive, and offline she gets harassed. When the principal discovered the profile, she deemed it inappropriate, and informed her parents. TV coverage of internet predators has always been popular, and usually the same. Frontline cites a study done by the DOD, that says teens online know what to do when confronted by a predator, and that the most affected people are often worse offline that online. They tell the sad story of a kid that killed himself because of cyberbullying.

If I were to do a story on the impact of the internet and digital media on my life, I would write about what a blessing it is. TV networks, parents, and teachers are afraid of the internet, and when they see documentary like "Growing Up Online", they believe that their fears are well founded, and they need to do something about it. My story would document how people like myself can collaborate on the internet to make something great. I love computers, purely for the vastness of tasks that can be accomplished with them.
