Growing Up Online
The video text, “Growing up Online” was produced and directed by Dirs Rachel Dretzin and John Maggio. The video describes how young kids in today’s society are influenced by the use of technology. In the beginning of the video it starts off with how young kids with the use of technology can create their own little world and be whoever they want to be. The main source of technology for today’s generation is the internet. With the use of internet it allows kids to use chat and blog sites such as Facebook and Myspace to connect with other people and create a comfortable environment, but the problem with that is is that anyone has access to these websites and can create a new identity. Later in the video it talks about how internet is frequently used in the classroom in today’s society to help with education purposes because teachers want to keep the attention of the students. In today’s generation, kids are raised in environments where the use of internet is used to help connect with their everyday lives so by bringing technology into the classroom it can help connect with students in a way where they can understand it better. Along with all of the positives that come from using the internet for educational purposes, it is helping students take short cuts instead of actually learning materials. There are numerous internet sites where students can copy and paste other peoples work and read summaries of a book that they are supposed to actually read.
