Summary by Meagan Cronin "Is Google making us stupid?"

In Nicholas Carr’s essay “Is Google making us stupid?” he states how as more time goes on and on people are becoming more and more comfortable with technology. In his recent work he states “Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, loose the thread, begin looking for something else to do.” (pg1) In my own experience with reading I feel the same way. I can only go for about two or three pages as well before I start thinking about my weekend or random thoughts that pop into my head. Carr believes that as a society people rely so much on what the internet and technology has to offer. Carr also states “style of reading promoted by the Net, a style that puts “efficiency” and “immediacy” about all else.” (pg2) A thing like having the fastest internet is even important to me. The internet and technology is important to almost everyone. It is the best weapon against boredom. Things like Facebook, and MySpace are used for people to talk to each other and post things about themselves, that could almost make them seem like a completely different person. In his recent work Carr suggests that “Its becoming our map and our clock, our printing press and our typewriter, our calculator and our telephone and our radio and TV.” (pg3) Carr is saying how we as a society are becoming so used to being on a schedule that if that is displaced or interrupted people will start to freak out. This relates to me personally as well because I have to get up in the morning at a certain time or I will not wake up, I have to get on the city bus at a certain time or I will not be able to go to school. Also technology as I has said earlier is ever best threat against boredom. When I get bored I just log onto Facebook and play many of the games, or I get onto MySpace and talk to my friends and family. I use those things although as well to communicate with my family.
