There are several patterns and detail to pay attention to in this video text.
The commercial starts with a young white male knocking on the door of a monestary. An old man welcomes him with a face that almost says "foriegner". The old man leads him in to the building. This is an archetype dealing with the mentor-student relationship. This pattern can be identified in several films. Star Wars has Jedi Master, (Obi-Wan, Yoda..), and Lord Of the Rings has Gandalf. It just the idea of learning from an older master, or being taken on by a mentor. The commercial progresses to the young boy training. He is not succsessful for the most part and you watch him fail while music plays in the background. This is alot like a montage in rocky, and even a short film I made in high school. (dont watch it) Towards the end of the failure scence, you see the young boy getting his head shaven. Like some sort of initiatoin, or acceptance. This is another pattern we can recongnize. Of course the commercial flashes to black and back to video to see the young boy older and still bald. Somehow he has to show his progress to his masters, and everyone else at school. He demonstrates his raw power by flying around like a madman before breaking 3 bricks with his hands. Wow he just accomplished everything he dreamed of. Great. the commercial ends by everyone celebrating with pepsi. Each monk downs a can of cola and sets it down in front of them. There is a strange symbol on everyones forhead. Suddenly the young Monk understands and slams his head down upon the empty pepsi can, crushing it flat. And, yes you guessed it, he has a huge "pepsi can print" on his forehead.
Everyone can succeed, and after that they can drink a big 'ol pepsi, and we can all feel like a community cause we're all conforming.

Some oppositions that are apparant at first is the fact that the old man answers the door to the young boy. Through the course of this video text the young boy becomes a man and maybe someday a master himself.
ReplyDeleteSome identifiable myths and cultural assumptions is that the monks would not be drinking pepsi. To go beyond that this culture would not even consider pepsi important. They're trying to say that pepsi is great for everyone, even random shoalin monks.
u are taking this waay too seriously
