Video review

As requested, I’m going to review a video off of you tube. However I am not going to review an advertisement, as that would be too easy. What I am going to review is a favorite song of mine, that was put onto you tube (it’s a video that means its fair game). Here’s a fair warning. The song you are about to hear is rather dark, so if you have a problem with things like that, do not look any further. With that being said, lets take a look at Sister of Charity by the 69 Eyes.

First of all you will notice the blue lighting on the stage. As we have read, lighting is a common if not obvious tool used in film and other forms of art to convey moods. The blue lighting shows that the song is somber but not quite morbid. Accompanying the mood lighting is the very first vocals which are sung in the form of church hymns. This gives the song a spiritual aspect, and shows that the writers wish for this song to be taken seriously. As the song progresses, we are treated to a close up of the lead singer, who is dressed in all black, yet is not dressed like some over zealous metal band trying to hammer in a message. The entire song is very subtle rather than bombastic, and flow of the song is very smooth and graceful. As the video moves forward, the camera moves back and forth from the stage, giving the audience an overview of the entire set, and then zooming in to the band members.

As with any other song it is open to interpretation, but I have a fair idea of the song's message. It's depicting the point of view of a soldier who is marching to war, but does not see the purpose behind it. The soldier seems to have a girlfriend or a wife who is waiting for him while also giving relief support to those in need (most likely caused by the war). As the name of the song suggests, she is left anonymous for unknown reasons. The lyrics "tears of the night turn to diamonds in your eyes" says to me that the soldier is raging at the dark because he does not wish to be there, yet his frustration is quelled when he thinks of his girlfriend.
