Robert G. Brown--Let the New Revolution Begin!!

Cynthia L. Selfe in her article “Lest We Think the Revolution is a Revolution” has presented us with a collaborative scenario of Americanization and the underlying principles it utilizes at incorporating all of its technological advancements for the betterment of mankind at the expense of neglecting the moral issues associated with the use of this technology. Through the elaborate use of media advertisements for presenting and supporting her claims, she brilliantly illustrates and brings to the forefront that technology alone can’t bring about constructive and positive change unless accompanied by a set of moral standards that work in unison with each other as opposed to the current contradictory standards that are still being practiced today. As she states “As much as Americans might like to think; technology is not the solution for all of the world’s problems—and, indeed, it might be a contributing cause to many of them.”
Essentially I agree, but there is one particular discrepancy that I continue to emphasize and that is, the technology isn’t a contributing factor, it is a neutral source and doesn’t exhibit any threatening qualities until its union to the human element becomes established. It is this human element that is responsible for inflicting all of mankind’s current social ales in conjunction with the use of this technology. If I continue to practice gender bias through the use of my computer and the internet forum, my computer isn’t going to revolt against this practice because it has no “real” intelligence of its own to do so. But if I surrender these practices and vow never to exercise this principle again in any environment whether “virtual” or not, then progress and a worthwhile revolution could materialize. Remember, Cynthia states that we are the “tool makers” and that the way in which we use our tools reveals our current values. Amen!!
If you truly want to start a revolution and not just “think” that there’s a revolution coming by means of technology then we have to “live” the revolution and eradicate the contradictions’ that impede the process for a permanent and successful change. It’s one thing to say I Love You, It’s another to live out and practice this love as defined for what it is. By integrating a very high degree of morals in conjunction with our use of technology and eliminating contradictions that will arise from our lives, then can we “Imagine” as John Lennon sang, a world of perfect peace and harmony, utopia at last??
P.S.
Remember Michael Wesch’s “A Vision of Students Today” and the implications of this disconnect he was trying to portray through his students to the viewers of his video? Why couldn’t we as a class do the same thing in starting a revolution that addresses the possible SOLUTIONS instead of addressing the problems and post this video on UTube for the world to see and become influenced by? I’ll bring the video camera if Mary and others would agree to make a small amount of time available for us and we’ll upload the content on UTube. It would really be worthwhile!!
