Pepsi Commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40DykbPa4Lc

In the beginning of this commercial it shows a boy that looks as if he has ran away from home, knocking on a door of a temple. As he is escorted into the temple he is looking around at all then other monks, taking in what they are wearing and what they are doing. The commercial then begins on with showing what the boy has to go through to become a monk, the training and his teacher teaching him, while showing that the little boy wants to quit. Towards the end of the commercial it shows the young boy all grown up and what it seems to be, taking a test in front of all the monks that live in the temple. When he is done and is sitting in front of the teacher/master everyone takes out a Pepsi cracks the top and holds the can, the young boy not paying attention or realizing what everyone else is doing drinks the whole Pepsi, he then soon learns that the Pepsi was not for drinking. The boy looks around as everyone is starring at him, he sees the flag of the symbol everyone has on their head and then learns he must pound the can with his head. After he does that, everyone starts jumping around in excitement for the boy has passed the test.
To me this shows cultural reinforcement, and ideology by the way the commercial portrays the values of the monk. Also the commercial shows me that when you work hard, and persevere for something that you really, really want you will succeed. There is a clip in the commercial where the boy is standing one legged on a rock pilar and his teacher is correcting him, by pushing his arm up and balancing. This shows me how parents in America will do anything to help their children achieve obstacles or just reach goals in life.

This ad is showing us that not all monks are these sanctuary type people and are not restricted to typical "monk like behavior", seeing as how monks do not drink pepsi. This is also saying that if you work hard and perservere you will be rewarded and accepted into society...by drinking pepsi? MYTH.
